A COLLABORATION WITH ANOTHER PLANET ENTERTAINMENT

Fox Oakland Building Tour

The Tour

When it opened in 1928 it wasn’t called the Fox, but it was the largest theater west of the Mississippi. It was also the first theater built to show motion pictures with sound. You’ll learn who built it, and why it was built here in Oakland, and maybe see a few of the elephants hidden inside. Along the way we might touch on spinning organs, White Slavery, the Black Panthers, and Jerry Brown’s electric billboard.

This 75 minute tour covers 99 years of history, and includes the theater interior and exterior. There’s about a mile and half of walking; everything is ADA accessible. Tour size is limited to 25 guests. The tour has been covered in SFGate and by the East Bay Yesterday Podcast.

The Leader

J.M. “Scooter” Marriner is an environmental designer and historian especially interested in modern architecture. He’s written a 32-page book about The Oakland Theater.
