Lake Merritt Old and New: A Walking Tour

We will start across the street from a beautiful seven-story building that was built in 1929. We will work our way up the hill to Haddon Lane, with its huge mansions. Then we will walk down to Athol Ave to see a few commercial buildings among the residential. As we descend Hanover and Lester Ave, view an incredible variety of homes from the late 1890s to new 2020 buildings. It will take two and a half hours to meet up, enjoy views, and walk up and down.

Meeting Location: Lakeshore Avenue by Lake Merritt, across from the 2122 Lakeshore Apartments

Accessibility Note: Paths and sidewalks are accessible for mobility devices. The route has moderate hills.

  • PLEASE MEET 15 MINUTES BEFORE listed time to allow for registration.

  • We kindly request you register in advance. In-person registration will be first-come-first-served on a space available basis. We cannot guarantee a spot will be available.

  • We offer fee waivers for limited income residents— just ask!

  • Comfortable walking shoes, sun hats and sunscreen are recommended. Bring water.
