Prior to building the freeway systems in Oakland, the main roads connecting the city with Sacramento and San Jose were East 14th Street and MacArthur Blvd. (Highway 50). Many motels sprang up to serve the weary auto traveler. Most of these were on MacArthur, and still exist today.
